Gym Location
Travelling too far to use a gym membership will eventually lead to the “conveneince factor” coming into play. If you have to travel more than 5-10 minutes to get to your local gym then sooner or later this will become a deterant and you will no longer use your gym membership. Find a local gym that is within a couple of minutes drive or walk from your home or office.

Gym Membership Options
Everyone likes options even when it comes to gym membership. Make sure you choose a gym membership option that suits both your needs and your budget. Don’t lock into a long term contract if you don’t have to. It’s better to pay a little more for the peace of mind in knowing that if you want to stop you can easily cancel your membership.

Gym Prices
The cost of joining a gym has not changed in recent times, especially as more health clubs open their doors. Be prepared to pay between $40 – $70 per month for the average gym membership. Make sure when joining you ask what the membership includes as some gyms charge extra for popular classes such as yoga, pilates and zumba.

Fitness Instructors & Personal Trainers
These days many gym operators think they are smart by reducing the number of fitness instructors and personal trainers they employ. Some even don’t have any at all. When joining a gym you need to know what to do to reach your goals. Ideally a fitness instrcutor or personal trainer will help write a program for you and show you how to use the gym equipment. Beware of gyms that sell you a gym membership then try to charge you extra to show you how to use the fitness equipment or have a gym program written for you.

Do Your Research Online First
Finding a gym that is right for you is as simple as logging onto the interenet and searching the local gyms in the area online. There are plenty of gym directory or fitness related websites that allow you to find local fitness clubs, gyms and health clubs near you. View and compare gym membership options and look out for gyms offering free gym passes or gym membership trials.

Try Before You Buy
Once of the best ways to decide if a gym is right for you is to try it out before you join. Make sure if you do that you go in the times and days that you would if you were a full paying member. Take note of how busy the gym is and how convenient is was for you to get there and find a parking spot. All these little things make a difference to your gym membershp participation experience. A couple of good websites that list all the free gym passes and gym membership deals are www.gym1.com.au and www.fitnesslink.com.au.

Gym Equipment Quality
The quality of the gym equipment in the fitness club or gym is a sign of how good a gym is. If they have old worn out fitness equipment it’s a good sign they are about to go out of business. Look for gyms with good quality fitness equipment that looks new and gets updated every couple of years.

No Joining Fee
For years the joining fee component to a gym membership has been a tool that gym membership sales consultants use to leverage a sale from you. Gyms do not need to charge joining fees and in most cases will waive them if you ask. Treat joining a gym like buying a car, be prepared to walk away if the deal is not right for you.

Joining a gym can help you get into shape, lose weight and improve your overall health and fitness. Make sure you take into account all factors when choosing the right gym for you.
