If you’ve been away from the workout scene for a while, or maybe you’ve never been a part of it, don’t be afraid to jump in and get your feet wet.  That being said however, you should be aware that there are things to do and things to avoid, when you are just getting started.  This article can act as a guide to help you gain results and avoid injury.

As a general rule of thumb, working out is hard work.  If you push yourself too hard or too much, you will burn out, stop working at it and eventually quit altogether.  To avoid any of this, make sure you pick a workout that you enjoy.  Working out does not have to be done in a gym.  If that is what you enjoy, then go for it.  But if sweating in a building with a bunch of other people isn’t your idea of a good time, then find something else to do.  You can take up hiking, running, or pretty much any sport.  Rock climbing is also another popular alternative these days.  Whatever it is, make sure that you enjoy it enough to WANT to do it, and do it often.

Before you begin any kind of biginner workout routine or program, always make sure to talk to your doctor and make sure of two very important things.  That you are healthy enough to take on a rigorous exercise program, and that the program you have in mind doesn’t have health complications you may be unaware of.

You need to have the right equipment for the job.  If you are going to be running, get a great pair of running sneakers.  If you are taking up rock climbing or hiking, make sure that you have all the proper gear, and that you are also properly trained to use that gear.  There is a bit of an investment to a lot of these sports, but in the end, it will probably be less expensive than a monthly gym membership.

Don’t overdo it at first.  Many times you can be so excited to get out there and start that you can push yourself too far too fast.  Start off very slow and cautious.  Don’t go for long periods at a time.  Start in small time increments and increase the length and intensity of your workout over time as you become accustomed to it.

Listen to what your body is telling you.  While you should experience a bit of pain or fatigue from a good workout, extreme pain, headaches, sickness, dizziness or any other strange sensations should be a sign to slow down.  Don’t push yourself to the extreme.  Your body knows when you are going to hard.  Be prepared to slow down or stop if your body is telling you to do so.

When you’ve finished with a workout, take some time to cool down properly.  Continue to walk around at a slow pace and take deep breaths.  Doing this will help your body to cool down and slow down naturally. Stopping any activity abruptly can cause soreness and fatigue.

While working out can be hard, it is also extremely rewarding and fun.  With these tips and suggestions in mind, you can be sure to have a great time and be well on your way to your fitness goals.
